The women’s fellowship, held in chapel on 19th May was led by guest speaker Mrs. Linda Wiley, a nutritionist. Congolese and Rwandese sisters entertained the women and showcased their culture as they hosted.

Nutrition is the study of how people consume nutrients in food. Linda talked about what we should eat and in which proportions. Linda also offered a rundown of the benefits of a good diet, which include sustaining a desirable weight and alleviating chronic diseases. She also spoke about preventing obesity in children and safety in food preparation.

The next fellowship will be on 16th June 2010.

The NEGST sports team travelled before sunrise to Kenya Highlands Bible College in Kericho on 6th March, 2010. They represented NEGST in the men’s 1500m, basketball, table tennis singles and doubles, chess, darts and volleyball.

Isaac Chelule was awarded the silver medal for the 1500m race. The basketball team, with only five talented young players – Edwin Savala, Aaron Strohbach, Dennis Marke, Dan Odhiambo and John Oketch – won gold. In table tennis, John Teke grabbed the gold medal by winning six undefeated singles matches in a row. Teke went on to partner with Martin Njuguna to win gold in the table tennis doubles. The volleyball team lost to Karen Christian College. In the chess competition, Ken Oywoki emerged victorious. AIU/NEGST went home with 8 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 3 trophies.

In February, during a chapel service led by the members of the governing council, the vice chancellor and council chair Mr Gideon Muriuki introduced two new members of the council. They are Mr Peter Wayaki, a lawyer, and Mr Aaih Fodey, general secretary for the Association of Evangelicals of East Africa.

At the service, the two new members pronounced their vows, led by Mr Gideon Muriuki. Faith Mlay dedicated them to the Lord’s service. On Thursday, 12th November, a farewell chapel was held for the dean of community life Pastor Gregory Kivanguli. He taught in the pastoral studies department and is a counselor by profession. During the farewell chapel, two young children were dedicated to God, children of Fabien Munyagisenyi and Bernard Kimani.

After the chapel the entire staff gathered at Tamu cafe for a farewell tea for Pastor Kivanguli, who is leaving NEGST to become senior pastor at the Kisumu Pentecostal Church.

The ladies’ fellowship held a jumble sale on Wednesday 28th 2009 in the Home science room of the classroom building. The ladies’ fellowship brings together married and unmarried, faculty, students, staff, spouses–any lady in the community. The funds raised at the sale will allow the ladies to bring gifts to the families of the numerous new babies on campus, invite speakers to monthly events, and organize special events and outings throughout the year.

The whole community–men, women and children–came together in great numbers to donate and purchase items for sale, including shoes, books, blenders, coffee makers, clothes, toys and more.

NEGST officially accepted 102 new students on 17th September 2009. The convocation ceremony started with a procession of the faculty members, followed by a word of prayer from the the deputy vice chancellor of academic affairs, Dr Mark Shaw. Dr Douglas Carew personally welcomed the new students. Dr Joe Mwangi gave a presentation of the Africa International University Tumaini Africa Campaign.

The convocation was culminated by a sermon by the deputy bishop for Christ is the Answer Ministries, Rev. Onginde. He preached on the importance of having a dream, without which people can not move forward. He based his sermon on the story of Joseph, speaking of the need for leaders who don’t expect material gain. He further stated the dream that NEGST has to become a full-fledged university.

At the end of the celebrations the invited guests and faculty lunched at the Kijiji Guest House.

On graduation day, July 4, NEGST was pleased to hold the opening ceremony for what is possibly the largest collection in the world of works in African languages. With 2,500 items, the Derek Nurse African Collection now is housed in its own facilities above the main library at NEGST.

Dr. John Mbiti opened the collection after the graduation ceremony. He quipped, “of making many books there is no end, and much study is weariness of the flesh,” but went on to call down blessings on the writers, publishers, purchasers and users of the collection, and to dedicate the collection to the Lord’s use.

The Bible club, which is designed specifically for kids, wanted to give its “graduates” a surprise send-off. The event took place on the 20th of June at the chapel. Many were involved and participated in a big way. Marylynn, the group’s founder, brought in snacks. Ken Isige, student council chairman, was the speaker for the event. The invited guest was Rev. Kivanguli, dean of community life, who brought books for the graduates in English and Kiswahili. David Rowbory played the keyboard.

Others who have been a big part of Bible club and made appearance on that day were Rose Siboi, Alemseged Ketema, Peter Kamande, Fortuna Tioye, Noo Alemeseged, Foluke Bosedi Ola, Winnie Muli, Catherine Nongnide and Rachel Kisyula.

A beautiful new children’s library is now open on campus. The kids are already coming in droves to check out books or to spend relaxing hours curled up with a good read on a cushion. More than 60 children have already registered, and the library has quickly become a favorite gathering point. NEGST children from several local schools even held a Bible club sleepover in the library.
