Words by Julie Rowbory (née Magill)
1. On a hot afternoon with the sun beating down
'Til it burnt up the ground like a brand,
With the sweat on his brow and a load on his back,
The slave stumbled over the sand.
With each step he took it grew harder to bear,
'Til his legs could sustain him no longer
And he fell to his knews and in anguish cried out to the LORD.
"I have seen," says the LORD, "I have seen
The suffering of my people."
"I have come," says the LORD, "for I've heard
All of their cries."
"I'll redeem," says the LORD, "I'll redeem.
I'll stretch out my strong arm to save you.
I'll rescue you out of your bondage and I'll lead you on.
Come follow, my child."
(bridge)
And the wrath and the judgment of God
Fell through the land.
All the power of Egypt
Could not face the might of his hand.
And in the darkness of midnight
The angel of death
Passed by every doorway and alley.
The only means of salvation they had
Was the blood of a lamb.
2. In the cold morning light with the crowd pressing in
Mocking the one they would kill,
With the blood on his brow and a cross on his back,
The man stumbled on up the hill.
And looking around with love in his eyes,
He stretched out his strong arms in silence,
And the wrath and the judgment of God
Was poured out on his son.
