Why are we members of Wycliffe Bible Translators?

We share a vision held by many within Wycliffe Bible Translators, and other translation organisations, to see the Bible translated for every language that needs one. The goal is for all people everywhere to have access to God's written word, through which they might encounter the Living Word, the Lord Jesus Christ.

How do we see ourselves fitting in?

We're still exploring the possibilities and being trained, but our passion is to help mother-tongue translators understand the Bible (ideally relying on the original Greek and Hebrew as much as possible), put it into vibrant and clear language, and then check that it's all being properly understood. We want to see God's word changing lives - our lives, our colleagues and others speaking the target language.

Are they just looking for amazing multi-lingual translation experts then?

No! (They're taking us!)

Wycliffe actually began training people who had never done any translation before. Whether you're a scientist or an artist, speak twenty languages or struggle with one, it's quite possible God may have unexpected talents ready to be unlocked for this kind of service.

  • David says: "I actually really struggled with French and German at school and thought there was no way I'd ever do anything with languages, especially spoken ones (Latin was a different matter). I didn't expect to get involved with translation work but through the Wycliffe training (on GRIP) after university, and experience living and working in Nigeria, I could see God providing the understanding and abilities I needed, and what had seemed unkown and difficult before, became comprehensible to my scientific mindset."

And actually while the core of Wycliffe's task is translating the Bible of course, there's a tremendous range of support roles that Wycliffe needs people to fill.

  • Teachers for missionary children are vital to enable parents to get on with translation and scripture use work.
  • Computer and technical support is a great challenge, and we need the very best on the mission field - not just geeks, but people who can make computers work for people doing straightforward tasks.
  • And in many other ways there are pressing needs in the UK and overseas for support workers.
